On February 15th, CHAIRE and the Environmental Professionals Network co-hosted Coyotes, Coffee, and Carnivores - Finding human-animal coexistence in a crowded world. The program featured discussions from CHAIRE's Program Coordinator, Madeline Winans, Dr. José Vicente López Bao from Universidad de Oviedo-Campus de Mieres, Dr. Stanley Gehrt from the School of Environment and Natural Resources, and President and CEO of Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Tom Schmid.

CHAIRE Graduate Student Brittany Fischer recently passed her candidacy exam and officially became a PhD candidate in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. Brittany is co-advised by Drs. Mark Flint and Tom Wittum, with additional committee members Dr. Jaylene Flint of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, and Drs. Jess Pempek and Kelly George of the Department of Animal Sciences.

The Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging/Assessment Contest (AWJAC) virtually celebrated its 21st year of competition on November 20th and 21st. The Ohio State University was once again well-represented across all student divisions: undergraduate junior, undergraduate senior, graduate, and veterinary. Students were co-coached by CHAIRE Members Zach England and Dr. Jess Pempek, and species covered in this year’s contest included psittacines as pets, cats in a research setting, and boar studs.

CHAIRE Members Dr. Jessica Pempek and Dr. Kelly George recently contributed to an episode of the Ohio State Animal Sciences Podcast which explored the topic of Animal Welfare. Written and recorded by Alec Reusch, and overseen by Dr. James Kinder, for The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences, within the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences, the Ohio State Animal Sciences Podcast takes a few minutes to provide an overview of a particular topic related to animal science.

Our third annual fundraising event took place one month ago today! On Saturday, October 2nd at the Ohio State Equine Center, CHAIRE hosted our fundraiser in a brand new format. This year's event featured a festival-style afternoon of animals interactions and demonstrations, kids' games, educational opportunities, a silent auction, music, and food trucks. This was a record-breaking fundraising event for CHAIRE, while also fulfilling CHAIRE's mission to expand our knowledge of the interrelationships between people, animals, and the environment.

After serving as Program Coordinator for CHAIRE for three years, Brittany Fischer is wrapping up her time in this position to continue pursuing her PhD in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the College of Veterinary Medicine and remaining engaged with our center as a CHAIRE Graduate Student. As the first Program Coordinator, Brittany has been a key figure in assisting with CHAIRE's development and progress to-date, facilitating many of CHAIRE's new programs and planning both of CHAIRE's very successful previous Annual Fundraisers.

Suzi Rapp retires from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium after 39 years of service this month! Suzi has been a major supporter of CHAIRE since the beginning, through both serving on CHAIRE's advisory committee, and facilitating and supporting several research, education, and outreach projects with the Animal Programs Department at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Please help us welcome Madeline Winans as the new CHAIRE Program Coordinator! Madeline will be taking over for Brittany over the next month as Brittany continues to pursue her PhD in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the College of Veterinary Medicine and remains engaged with our center as a CHAIRE Graduate Student.

Former CHAIRE graduate student Zach England recently accepted a Research Associate position working with Dr. Jessica Pempek, Animal Welfare Specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences at The Ohio State University. His role is to assist Dr. Pempek in conducting research which is currently focused on calf welfare. In the future, Zach will help with teaching students and have an extension role as well.

CHAIRE member Dr. Mark Flint and PhD student Brittany Fischer recently traveled to North and South Carolina to begin data collection for their project titled “Wild Sourced Collection of Marine Fishes for Aquariums: Assessing the Ecosystem Impact of Individuals Acquired.” Dr. Flint and Brittany were also accompanied by former graduate student Madeline Winans. The team spent the week collecting water quality parameters, surveying wild species, and performing health exams of fishes at two sites in each state as indicators of ecosystem health.
